SERVICES
NARRATIVE ASSESSMENT
I will provide you with a thorough editorial letter/critique that focuses on big picture analysis including recommendations for strengthening plot beats, narrative and character arcs, point of view, pacing, and notes on your story concept and the book’s marketability. If you ask yourself, “Does my overall story concept work, and is it salable?” then this service is for you!
*Note The Story Assessment does not provide margin notes on your manuscript (unlike the Developmental Edit)
DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT
This service is intended for book drafts that require deep dive, scene by scene commentary and margin notes via Track Changes in Word, and a detailed editorial letter with copious notes providing recommendations to strengthen voice, dialogue, plot beats, plot arc, characterization, character arc, pacing, continuity, and setting. I will also point out general grammatical and punctuation errors.
LINE EDIT
This service is the “final” edit of your story, and will provide line by line revision suggestions on grammar, spelling, punctuation, word choices, sentence length and structure, pacing, active verb usage, and dialogue. Line edits may also involve cutting narrative or dialogue that is repetitive, implied, or unnecessary to move the story forward.
QUERY LETTER REVISION
Now that your manuscript is clean and polished, you will need to craft a one-page query letter asking a literary agent or acquiring editor at a publishing house if they will consider reading your full manuscript. I will help you craft a killer query letter that will grab an agent’s or editor’s attention and beg them to read your pages. As a bonus included in the fee, I will work with you through multiple passes until your query letter is whipped into pristine, submission-ready shape.
ONE-PAGE SYNOPSIS REVISION
Most literary agents and acquiring editors request a one-page, single-spaced synopsis. I will help you create the most compelling and concise synopsis possible — which will highlight your story’s most essential and captivating plot points. This service entails working with you through as many passes as necessary to chisel your synopsis into submission-ready shape.
ABOUT ME
Since earning a degree in psychology and biology from UCLA, I have spent much of my time in and out of jail—teaching creative writing to incarcerated teens. My critically acclaimed book, One Cut—a haunting true story with a juvenile-justice bent—launched Simon and Schuster’s YA true crime line (which I co-created). A former agent with Jill Corcoran Literary, I speak at conferences all over the country and teach courses at UCLA on all things publishing. A highly collaborative developmental editor, I pride myself on whipping manuscripts into submission-ready shape, and have guided countless authors on their paths to publication.
HOW I OPERATE
Prior to committing to work with me, we can chat via phone or Zoom, so that we can get to know each other a little bit. I then provide an Author Editor Agreement, which spells out the services I’ll provide, and holds me to an agreed upon deadline. I will provide copious written revision notes on your manuscript through the Track Changes feature in Word. I will also deliver an editorial letter addressing what works, what needs work, and practical suggestions for how to revise efficiently. Afterward, I am happy to talk by phone to answer questions or brainstorm solutions to problem areas.
